Artist Management

Artist Directory

The SPIC MACAY Artist Directory

Curating India's finest classical and folk artists since 1977.

The artist directory manages profiles, classification, payments, and event assignments. Artists are organized by lists, grades, and artform categories. Hybrid search combines fuzzy text matching with semantic embedding for intelligent discovery.

Since 1977

Data Model

Lists, Grades, and Artforms

Artists are classified along three independent axes, each serving a different purpose in programme planning and payment calculation.

Artist Lists

Nine programme types: LD, WD, Talk, Folk, Theatre & Cinema, Walk, Craft, Yoga, Accompanying. An artist can belong to multiple lists.

Artist Grades

Seniority tiers that determine honorarium amounts via the payment matrix. Labels can be overridden per list.

Artforms & Categories

What art the artist practices (e.g., Sitar, Bharatanatyam). Categories group related artforms for filtering.

Payment Matrix

List × Grade = honorarium amount. ArtistPaymentList + ArtistPaymentTier define the full matrix.

Critical Pattern

Two-Level Event-Artist Linking

Artists connect to events at two levels. Getting this wrong inflates event counts by 2-3x. Always join through event_artists_in_events, never directly through eventGroupId.

Level 1: EventArtist

Links artist to an EventGroup (tour/convention). Means 'this artist is part of this group' — NOT 'performed at every event in the group'.

Level 2: EventArtistInEvents

Links an EventArtist to a specific Event. This is the actual performance record. Always use this for counts.

WRONG: Join through eventGroupId

Convention EventGroups have 25+ events. Joining through eventGroupId counts every event for every artist — 2-3x inflation.

CORRECT: Join through event_artists_in_events

Join event_artists → event_artists_in_events → events. This gives accurate per-artist event counts.

Profile & Search

Hybrid search combining pg_trgm fuzzy matching with pgvector semantic embeddings. Honorific stripping for better matching accuracy.

Fuzzy text + semantic embedding search
Honorific stripping (Pt., Ustad, Dr.)
Quick-create inline from any page

Status & Approval

Status workflow gates public visibility. New artists start as inReview and must be approved before they appear publicly.

inReview → performing → guru workflow
unlisted = hidden without deletion
Irreversible merge for duplicates

Payment Matrix

List × Grade matrix determines honorarium amounts. Advance tracking and per-event payment records complete the financial picture.

ArtistPaymentList × ArtistPaymentTier = amount
ArtistAdvance tracking for prepayments
Per-event payment on EventArtistInEvents
